If you tend to get cavities or have bleeding/reced If you tend to get cavities or have bleeding/receding gums it is safe to say the reason is related to a combination of unhealthy saliva, unbalanced oral microbiome and inflammation.

How to fix that takes a very individualized approach and there is usually not much time at a regular dental appointment to address these issues.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but if you are feeling overwhelmed about the health of your mouth...keep reading.

What I need you to understand is that the tooth and gum issues that you are experiencing are just the symptoms of something much bigger going on beneath the surface.

Symptoms do not exist in isolation.

They are never without cause…

And unless you deal with the actual root cause of dental problems… you will be stuck in a cycle of symptom patching forever.

I say this because one of the biggest misconceptions that kept my clients stuck was this idea that if they just switched toothpastes, flossed more and got the recommended treatment done the tooth or gum problem would go away. 

This “solution” didn’t take into account the quality and quantity of the saliva. 

This meant that despite all their efforts to patch all the symptoms…they would return and more problems would keep popping up, leaving them feeling like they were back at square one.

It wasn’t until I started looking into the factors affecting the health of the saliva that I was able to achieve more permanent results with my clients.

Nope, it’s a part of it of course but we focus so much on that part and then can get easily frustrated when all the hard work doesn’t pay off and ya still get tooth and gum issues. 

Looking after your teeth from the outside is a must but what about from the inside out?

Breathing and Breathwork has been the most impactful tool for helping my clients improve their oral health and to make them smile more!

Being an independent dental hygienist I often get Being an independent dental hygienist I often get asked how it works not working with a dentist.

While I do not work directly with a dentist I collaborate with my clients dentist regularly and find a suitable one for them if they don’t have one.

Dental hygiene is all about prevention.

Preventing tooth and gum problems before they start and help reduce and eliminate symptoms so they don’t turn into bigger problems.

It is important to note that helping clients improve their oral health goes well beyond making sure their smile is nice and healthy.

Tooth, gum and TMJ  issues are often symptoms of something else going on in the body and problems in the mouth affect the health of the entire body.

My mission as an independent dental hygienist is to help my clients improve their oral health and prevent future oral and whole health problems. 

I help keep my clients from needing to sit in their dentist's chair other than for a yearly (or less) dental check-up. 

The goal is to have my clients learn to take control of their oral health and wellness so that they always know what to expect at their dentist visits.

Learning what their bodies personally need to prevent cavities and gum disease goes far beyond flossing! (An “F word” in my opinion:)

The beauty of being an independent dental hygienist is being able to take the time with each individual client to do just this!

Plaque bacteria usually is white and pretty hard to see if it’s been missed after brushing and flossing (or whatever you like to use to clean between your teeth).

When this plaque biofilm is left on the teeth it increases the risk of sensitive teeth, cavities and gum disease plus the more it builds up the more the dental hygienist has to remove and the more your cleaning may cost!

I often find that the people I work with are super motivated to start making changes right away, and they want to implement it all - and all at once! But the truth is, slow and steady wins the race, and one step at a time is better. ⁣

If a client in my clinic tells me that they brush once a week, I am NOT going to send them off with instructions to brush twice a day and floss! Instead, together, my client and I will set smaller, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 like brushing once a day. ⁣
⁣
And you know what? When that person comes back and shares that they are now brushing 3-5 times a week… I'M GONNA CELEBRATE! 🎉 That is success! And much better for long term habit change! 🙂 ⁣

The same goes for food and nutrition.  This has a lot to do with oral health, but I’m not going to revamp a client's diet all at once! Baby steps and celebrating the wins (big and small) 🥳 - that is how we get to where we’re going! ⁣

This is one of the most common questions that I get about toothpaste types and holistic oral hygiene care.⁣

Do I opt for more natural or conventional oral health care products? ⁣

The way I look at it is: There is a need for both, and everyone is different!⁣
⁣
Let’s say a person has high blood pressure.  The doctor may choose to treat them with medication 💊 or perhaps start with diet and lifestyles modifications first. The course of treatment will be very individualized, and based on many factors. While there may be side effects from the medication, the benefits may outweigh the risks for this individual.⁣
⁣
The same goes for conventional dental recommendations. While some people can go with more natural products, others may need to start with the “medication”.⁣
⁣
My mission is to help people to build a strong oral health foundation so that they can opt for more natural products, but everyone has a different starting point - and some may benefit from a little convention along the way!⁣

Here’s a confession: 𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗜 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹! ⁣

❌Snapping the floss between the teeth just doesn’t cut it (though it could cut your gums!), and it is not an effective way of removing food or bacteria!⁣
✔The floss needs to be gently placed in between the teeth and then adapted to one side. Then, it should be brought up and down against the tooth, and then to the other side to do the same. You should then move to a clean part of the floss and repeat the process in the next interdental space, until you have done them all. ⁣

The brush doesn’t remove bacteria from in between the teeth, so something else is needed to reach those areas. For some people, floss works well for that and it doesn’t drive them crazy.⁣

 For others, however, it may not be the tool of choice. If you’re like me and you’re not a floss-fan, maybe try a soft pick, waterpik, floss stick, or rubber tip… Anything that you will actually use and that won’t frustrate you is ideal! ⁣

I hear this a lot. Actually, some people are even surprised when I tell them to brush their gums as well as their teeth at all! ⁣

Bacteria hang out along the gum line. So yes, brush your gums too! And if they bleed, it’s a sign they need more love! So be sure to give them some by brushing! 🤍 ⁣
