Ouch, this is a hard one 👉

But the truth is daily mouthwash use can really mess with the body head to toe! It may seem like it would be a good idea to destroy all the bacteria in the mouth but doing that kills the good guys too!

Why? Because without a good amount of bacteria in the mouth the oral microbiome gets unbalanced and that not only increases the risk of oral disease it also messes with digestion!

I know that so many dentists and dental hygienists still regularly recommend using mouthwash daily so it may seem hard to challenge this recommendation

But if you are currently struggling with your teeth, gums or jaw and especially if you also have blood sugar or blood pressure regulation issues…seriously consider breaking this habit!

What recommendations come up first?

I did this and, shocker, the most recommended things to do for all of the top oral health concerns

↪️ floss daily
▶️ brush daily and after meals
🔀 use a fluoridated toothpaste
➡️ use mouthwash daily
↘️ see your dentist regularly

How’s that working for you? 🤨

No wonder so many people are still struggling, doing their best with little to no improvement!

Floss daily - if floss is frustrating find something that works better for you to clean between your teeth daily.

Brush your teeth- brush in the morning and before bed, never right after eating! Brush well, brush less!

Fluoride toothpaste may not be your best choice. There are safer alternatives.

Rinse with water or oil pull instead of using regular mouthwash.

See your dentist regularly- yep, keep doing that!

Prevention is key! And much less expensive.

Important ‼️ the above modifications to traditional recommendations will surely help but if you are lacking in some of the oral health fundamentals then that’ll also keep you stuck!

Eat enough healthy fats
Eat enough fiber
Quality 7-9 hours sleep
Breathe only through your nose

This drives me crazy about dentists 😡

I know that fellow dental hygienist will agree here ⬇️

When you spend the last hour with a patient and have gone into detail discussing your concerns with their gums…

And then the dentist comes in and says “things look good, great check up”

And pretty much erases everything you just said!

The big problem with this, and it happens all the time, is when the dentist says things look good, the patient hears that and feels nothing is wrong and may not take the bleeding gums seriously.

Bleeding needs to be taken seriously!

If your arm bleeds when you touch it, I’m sure everyone would be concerned and no one would say “perfect check up”!

Bleeding gums affects the health of the entire body and is never normal no matter how long it’s been or how many times the dentist said “things look good”.

Listen to your dental hygienist! (All said with love)

Did you know that even just 3-5 minutes of conscious breathing exercises can help you increase saliva flow?

Sitting quiet, without interruptions (yes, lock yourself in the bathroom 🚽 if needed!)

Bring your attention to your breathing 😮‍💨

Inhale gently through your nose 👃 for 3-6 seconds

Exhale gentle through your nose 👃 for 4-6 seconds.

Try to exhale longer than your inhale.

Your mind will wander, that’s ok just bring yourself back to your breath!

Within time and sometimes practice, you’ll start to notice your saliva become more watery.

Try this a few times and tell me when you notice any changes 🥰 ⬇️

Gum disease includes:

Bleeding gums aka gingivitis
Receding gums
Gum pockets 4mm+
Bone loss

“Just a little bit of bleeding” needs to be addressed so that it does not progress.

Whether you notice bleeding at home or they tell you at the dentist

The most important thing to do is to understand that this is a message from your mouth alerting you to something going on in the body.

Often people are just told to floss more and maybe go to the dentist more often

What is not often discussed are the ways beyond the floss that will help you to reverse or keep stable and help prevent future oral-systemic problems.

She had pretty uneventful dental appointments until that all changed what seemed like all of a sudden!

Gum pockets, bone loss on X-rays, bleeding gums…

Gum specialist referral was recommended by her dentist.

💯 good idea of course but I always want to accompany that with a whole health approach.

Let’s do an oral health audit and investigate for clues 🕵️‍♀️ and other signs and symptoms.

➡️ reflux

➡️ sleep breathing issues
➡️ dysfunctional breathing
➡️ oral hygiene

Oral hygiene is last because it is rarely the issue yet that’s what people focus most on!

In this case, her saliva and oral microbiome seemed to be most negatively affected by inflammation and reflux.

We worked together on a plan and she put it into action!

Happy to report that her hard work paid off and her gums stabilized and there was no longer a need for specialist intervention.

She knows what she still is at higher risk and also knows where to focus to keep things in check!

Whitening toothpaste does not whiten your teeth 🦷 🤯

Sadly, these toothpastes are usually quite abrasive and while your teeth may seem to get whiter at first will often make your teeth darker and stain prone over time.

The enamel is the outside and whitest layer of the tooth, and harsh toothpaste will wear away that layer making the tooth look more yellow.

Sooo keep your toothpaste simple and gentle and steer clear of whitening toothpaste!

The problem is that we tend to think what we are used to is good because we don’t know otherwise! It’s “our” normal!

Testing your BOLT score- which is a simple breath hold that provides feedback of the body to the accumulation of carbon dioxide.

The lower the number the more likely the way you breathe is affecting your sleep, stress resilience and your oral health!

I don’t brush after meals but will use the waterpik if I’ve had spinach or kale 🥬 ⁣
⁣
Before bed I brush a full 2 minutes with my electric toothbrush and waterpik 5 seconds between each tooth.⁣

That’s it!⁣

And honestly, if I miss a step here or there it won’t make that big of a difference because I’ve made sure my mouth is resilient!⁣

1 minute morning brush with my electric toothbrush (should ideally be 2min but oh well. I brush before coffee and breakfast, not after)⁣
⁣
10 second ish tongue scrap⁣
⁣
I don’t brush after meals but will use the waterpik if I’ve had spinach or kale 🥬 ⁣
⁣
Before bed I brush a full 2 minutes with my electric toothbrush and waterpik 5 seconds between each tooth.⁣
⁣
That’s it!⁣
⁣
And honestly, if I miss a step here or there it won’t make that big of a difference because I’ve made sure my mouth is resilient!⁣

Receding gums can be a pain for many people

Not just because it can increase tooth sensitivity but because it can be frustrating doing your best to try to prevent them from receding more

Only to find out that they keep receding and you’re closer to needing a gum graft!

Sure you’ve been told to brush gently with a soft toothbrush but has anyone asked you about…

Digestion?
Stress levels?
Can you breathe through your nose?
Bruxism and sleep quality?

If your gums are receding then it’s indication that something is affecting the health of your saliva and oral microbiome.
