But the truth is daily mouthwash use can really mess with the body head to toe!  It may seem like it would be a good idea to destroy all the bacteria in the mouth but doing that kills the good guys too! 

Why? Because without a good amount of bacteria in the mouth the oral microbiome gets unbalanced and that not only increases the risk of oral disease it also messes with digestion! 

I know that so many dentists and dental hygienists still regularly recommend using mouthwash daily so it may seem hard to challenge this recommendation 

But if you are currently struggling with your teeth, gums or jaw and especially if you also have blood sugar or blood pressure regulation issuesโ€ฆseriously consider breaking this habit!

No wonder so many people are still struggling, doing their best with little to no improvement!

Floss daily - if floss is frustrating find something that works better for you to clean between your teeth daily.

Brush your teeth- brush in the morning and before bed, never right after eating!  Brush well, brush less!

Fluoride toothpaste may not be your best choice. There are safer alternatives.

Rinse with water or oil pull instead of using regular mouthwash. 

See your dentist regularly- yep, keep doing that! 

Prevention is key! And much less expensive.

Important โ€ผ๏ธ the above modifications to traditional recommendations will surely help but if you are lacking in some of the oral health fundamentals then thatโ€™ll also keep you stuck!

I know that fellow dental hygienist will agree here โฌ‡๏ธ

When you spend the last hour with a patient and have gone into detail discussing your concerns with their gumsโ€ฆ

And then the dentist comes in and says โ€œthings look good, great check upโ€

And pretty much erases everything you just said!

The big problem with this, and it happens all the time, is when the dentist says things look good, the patient hears that and feels nothing is wrong and may not take the bleeding gums seriously.

Bleeding needs to be taken seriously!

If your arm bleeds when you touch it, Iโ€™m sure everyone would be concerned and no one would say โ€œperfect check upโ€!

Bleeding gums affects the health of the entire body and is never normal no matter how long itโ€™s been or how many times the dentist said โ€œthings look goodโ€.

Did you know that even just 3-5 minutes of conscious breathing exercises can help you increase saliva flow?

Sitting quiet, without interruptions (yes, lock yourself in the bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ if needed!)

Bring your attention to your breathing ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ 

Inhale gently through your nose ๐Ÿ‘ƒ for 3-6 seconds 

Exhale gentle through your nose ๐Ÿ‘ƒ for 4-6 seconds.

Try to exhale longer than your inhale.

Gum specialist referral was recommended by her dentist.

๐Ÿ’ฏ good idea of course but I always want to accompany that with a whole health approach.

Whitening toothpaste does not whiten your teeth ๐Ÿฆท ๐Ÿคฏ 

Sadly, these toothpastes are usually quite abrasive and while your teeth may seem to get whiter at first will often make your teeth darker and stain prone over time.

The enamel is the outside and whitest layer of the tooth, and harsh toothpaste will wear away that layer making the tooth look more yellow.

Sooo keep your toothpaste simple and gentle and steer clear of whitening toothpaste!
