Do You Do Any of These Oral Health Saboteurs? I Do You Do Any of These Oral Health Saboteurs? 

I know it seems like I harp a lot about the same things BUTโ€ฆ

The reality is it is usually the most simple things that my clients are doing that are leading to them getting results that they DONโ€™T want in their lives.

You may be thinking โ€œYes Heatherโ€ I know, I know, I know I am supposed to be drinking enough water but it CANโ€™T be the reason I am still experiencing sensitivity or pain!

Wellโ€ฆIโ€™m here to tell you that you should never underestimate these basics.

Drinking all your waterโ€ฆ

Helps keep your saliva healthy 
Helps reduce inflammation 
Helps keep the oral microbiome happy

Which all leads to better oral health! 

The same thing goes for eating pro-inflammatory foods and not recognizing sources of sugar.
 
You may think that they are not a big deal but they are the very things that can really impact your goal of improving your oral health indefinitely.

So before you go looking for a more complicated solutionโ€ฆcommit to avoiding these mistakes.

Knowledge is Freedom Emily lived for so many year Knowledge is Freedom

Emily lived for so many years believing that she was just cursed with weak teeth and gums that would regularly bleed. But now she knows that she has more control over her oral health than she thought and the power to improve the health of her saliva!  What surprised her the most was that it had nothing to do with flossing and everything to do with the foods she was eating and the quality of her sleep! 

Before she knew this was the solution to keeping her teeth sensitivity and cavity free, Emily was experiencing gut issues and broken sleep on top of dreading her dental appointments because they always seemed to find something that needed to be fixed and of course she would feel guilty for not flossing enough. (She never made the connection and neither did her doctor or dentist.)

Now that Emily has the knowledge she needed to get her tooth and gum problems under control she is able to have more confidence in her smile and she no longer anxiously anticipates her dental care visits! Propping your head up too much may interfere with your airway and breathing and may result in breathing through your mouth at night.

Soo use a good pillow or none at all and be sure to breathe through your nose all the time!

Itโ€™s one thing to go every 6-9 months for preventative care

Itโ€™s another thing to have to book additional appointments to fill cavities.

Ya got better things to do with your time and money ๐Ÿ’ฐ 

Kids and cavities are not a normal part of childhood and should not be treated as such.

If there is decay in the mouth (kids or adults) it is an indication that there is an imbalance of bacteria in the mouth and there are more harmful bacteria floating around in there.

This can be corrected! And it should be!

Not just to save you trips to the dentist but to help prevent this type of bacteria from spreading to the brain, heart, lungsโ€ฆ

Because it does. 

Keep the saliva healthy and the mouth bacteria balanced and you wonโ€™t have to deal with problems!

First, and Iโ€™ll speak for Ontario because thatโ€™s what I know, you always have the choice! 

Just because you go to a certain dentist it does not mean that you are required to see the dental hygienist associated with them.

Consistency and comfort are so important in the oral health and wellness journey.

Especially if you suffer with tooth, gum or jaw issues it is so important to find that good match!

๐Ÿค Independent dental hygienists are regulated professionals and insurance companies recognize their fee guide as they would a traditional dental office.

๐Ÿค Your dentist should be understanding and know your right to choose your preventative care provider and welcome you back for your yearly (or based of your individual risk factors) dental recare examination.

๐Ÿค Independent dental hygienists as business owners tend to have more freedom and flexibility in their schedule to help prevent you from going overdue due to full schedules or staffing difficulties and also allow for more time for education and empowerment which is key to preventing future potentially costly and painful problems.

Tooth decay, gum disease and even jaw issues are preventable diseases!

Yeah, Iโ€™m implying that our mind has a lot to do with our teeth, gums and especially TMJ!

mouthwash is an important part oral self care ๐Ÿค” 
fluoride is essential for preventing cavities ๐Ÿค” 
Anti-tartar, anti this anti that and donโ€™t forget the whitening toothpaste is key to a healthy mouth ๐Ÿค” 

Hard false on the above ๐Ÿ‘†โŒ

Yet, I still hear this as pretty standard recommendations.

And I must say the marketing behind it is pretty impressive that sometimes Iโ€™m even tempted!

Here is the mindset shift! 

Keep it simple when it comes to your oral self careโ€ฆminimal ingredientsโ€ฆ pretty much the less it claims to do the better!

Skip the mouthwashโ€ฆ

And as for the fluorideโ€ฆ I wonโ€™t touch that topic in this post but for now againโ€ฆreach for the paste with the least ingredients.

All too often I see people suffering due to the irritation of the products they are using and think are helping.

And the belief that the products used are the answer without considering the other things that greatly affect oral health.

โœ… healthy breathing
โœ… adequate nutrition 
โœ… proper hydration 
โœ… stress resilience 
โœ… quality sleep

Those are the topics that really need to be addressed for a lifetime of happy and healthy smiles.

Unfortunately this stuff is not not as common knowledge as I think it should be! So I created a few resources to help people start to apply  it for their own individual needs so they can get rid of their symptoms and help prevent future problems.

I donโ€™t know who needs to hear this but if you are feeling overwhelmed about the health of your mouth...keep reading.

What I need you to understand is that the tooth and gum issues that you are experiencing are just the symptoms of something much bigger going on beneath the surface.

Symptoms do not exist in isolation.

They are never without causeโ€ฆ

And unless you deal with the actual root cause of dental problemsโ€ฆ you will be stuck in a cycle of symptom patching forever.

I say this because one of the biggest misconceptions that kept my clients stuck was this idea that if they just switched toothpastes, flossed more and got the recommended treatment done the tooth or gum problem would go away. 

This โ€œsolutionโ€ didnโ€™t take into account the quality and quantity of the saliva. 

This meant that despite all their efforts to patch all the symptomsโ€ฆthey would return and more problems would keep popping up, leaving them feeling like they were back at square one.

It wasnโ€™t until I started looking into the factors affecting the health of the saliva that I was able to achieve more permanent results with my clients.
